So we find a new and rare species at the bottom of the South China sea - basically it's a slow growing, slow reproducing, scavenger that cleans the ocean floor of dead material.. What's the first thing we do ? Catch it and eat it ! Now a delicacy in Asian food markets with plans to extend it's distribution further afield.

I despair ...this is not essential food for the masses - it's an expensive, largely irreplaceable, delicacy for a very small number of very rich people. Is it any wonder the planet is trashed.

If someone found the last living dinosaur on the planet someone else would want to eat it.

Whilst the BBKA is flourishing, dinosaurs are not in danger.

Recently tuna made a reappearance in our territorial waters after a disappearance owing to over fishing. The first thing our wonderful government did was set a limit for catching it - instead of imposing a ban whilst it regained strength. Oh and it looks like Starmer is about to give our fishing quotas to the EU so the factory ships will have a short lived hey day.
So depressing.

maybe we should just cut out the middleman and eat the rich

A story about the Navy facing up to a Russian spy ship this week, but our fishing areas seem to be available to all and sundry. I seem to recall Cornish fishermen being very vocal about how brexit would reclaim our waters in the run up to the vote, but now they seem a tad disillusioned. What's up with UK governments - they lost the Cod War against Iceland, but haven't the guts or whatever to do something similar to "protect" our own fishing industry? Near me, fishing for famous Cromer crabs is under attack on two fronts - the environmentalists suggest that crab pots are damaging the sea bed and fish stocks - I don't think that any of the local fisherfolk are interested in shooting themselves in the foot! The second is the proliferation of wind turbines and the attendant cables which are reducing fishing areas - mainly to the west. In the brave new world of this and previous governments UK fishing and farming can go hang so that chums in Chelsea can charge their Teslas.
Sorry about the rant!

the majority of the factory ships working our waters are British concerns anyway

It’s so depressing. Every day I see rubbish like this.

I've sadly reached the conclusion that the majority of people in a position to do anything about it just don't give a monkeys. As long as they get what they want now, any negative consequences are someone else's problem. Perhaps even their own childrens' and grandchildrens'.

Nahh, feed to pigs, not all rich are despicable humans, the vast majority are good decent people. It is those with power and that particular bent who are the problem. They are easily identified. One of the most wealthy industrialists in American history said "wealth is a responsibility not a privilege "

Is that on paper since the Dutch ships were excluded and are simply rebadged. We and the Dutch are the 2 most interlinked nations on Earth when it comes to business. Whoever owns them changes not the facts of their destruction at wiping the seabeds clear of all life

It is blind greed and that prevents them seeing beyond themselves
