I can go on a queen rearing course in May, but is it worth the hassle?

If you the money and time go for it. I personally wouldn't.

If I was to need tons of queens, it may be of advantage to me.

Do some good research and watching YouTube, ask Questions here and you'll be good to go.

It is not difficult! By reading and selectively viewing you tube vids I taught myself to graft last year. As a consequence all my hives have 2017 queens with six in reserve in nucs. OK, First batch the take was only 25%, but better on the second. Can only improve with practice at grafting ( which is only one way of rearing queens). 100% mated, and all were laying well.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and has added a new dimension to my beekeeping.

Yes it's worth the hassle if it's free and not far to travel. Otherwise YouTube videos are invaluable.
