It appears to be only the larger green woodpeckers that have a go at hives and it is my understanding they are much happier eating ants (or peanuts!). The problem occurs when the ground is frozen and they cannot get to their favorite food.
I have not found any record of the smaller GSW and LSW having a go at a hives all of the holes I've seen in brood boxes are 6-8cm (green woodpecker) rather than 4-5cm GSW and LSW - mind you having photographed them at nests they would appear to be easily able to "drill" through a few millimeters of cedar.
I guess I'm just being over cautious but ten pounds worth of chicken wire seems much better than a ruined brood box and a dead colony....
