It never ceases to amaze me how a tiny seedling needs a saw when the plant eventually goes in the compost bin

Very true especially my borage, last year it grew to 4ft with huge stalks, chopped them up and used them as mulch

Yes I've recently bought a paraffin heater
As per Dani, you need reliable warmth (preferably below) or the seeds will just rot for the heat loving plants like tomatoes, chillies, aubergines and peppers. I start mine with a heated propagator or indoors on the warmest windowsill which doesn't get bottom heat but is at a good room temp of around 20 degrees +

Yesterday I went to look at a new apiary site on someone's croft nearby. It's totally perfect, much better than where they are now... and to top it off they've said I'm welcome to grow veg, or anything I want! I'm currently at the bottom of a very long allotment waiting list, so the season is suddenly full of unexpected promise!

In my previous gardens I've grown tatties, carrots, onions, leeks, peas, runner & broad beans, beetroot, courgettes, squashes, salad leaves... loads of things - I plan to try and squeeze in as many of these as possible!

Best get cracking then, whilst suppliers still have seeds left :)

First cut of the season

My father-in-law went out and fired up the mower this morning. He decided against actually cutting anything, even if the grass is looking a bit straggly. It's a bit chilly here still -- not even 9°C today.

I sowed some borage in modules in the greenhouse. It's a bit early yet according to the packet, but if it's still too cold come the time to transplant it then I can put it in the polytunnel.

Thought I'd go out and do some weeding in the veggie plot today as sycamore seedlings are starting to come up all over the place. To my horror I also found bittercress, groundsel, purple deadnettle and what looked a lot like speedwell, all in flower. In fact I even found some bittercress with unripe seeds on! That's really not playing the game at the start of March.

I got about three and a half beds done. Same again to finish the job, though I think the last three should be much easier.

I swear our bittercress grows all through the winter. I’m finding goose grass!
It does I have it flowering in places in the garden. @JamezF dead nettle is a good bee forage :)
It was sown here as part of a ground cover nectar rich source.

Paraffin heater has done its job👏

First cut of the season

:puke::gnorsi::smash:

Don't you just hate those people who get the lawnmower out when yours is lurking at the back of the shed, menacing, buried under the gardening detritus you threw in there after the last cut in the autum and guaranteed not to start until at least the point where your arm is feeling like it's falling off.

I'll bet you even cleaned it, emptied the fuel out and had it serviced over the close season ....

Sadly, I'm a mere mortal ....:laughing-smiley-014:icon_204-2:

You should see our sit-on; half covered with a tarp one side of the workshop, totally covered in sawdust.
