It's a fairly fluid thing.... more than 10, less than 15
Just finished my inspection and found this so I’ve marked the frame and come inside for a cuppa to check and decide what to do next. I think it’s an open queen cell. It’s in an odd position - sideways on top bar of brood frame. No royal jelly so it’s probably day 6 or 7 (last inspection was on 24th, poor weather has meant I could only get into the hive today).
Can someone kindly confirm it’s what I think it is!BA327237-D1EF-478B-BA26-FFEFBC2B29C1.jpeg54EBD5ED-2731-4564-BD41-AD0C2A590BF3.jpeg

Are you sure its the only possibly QC in the hive?

Only saw this one plus two playcups (empty). 8 frames of BIAS, plenty of stores & 3 frames of space. Drones & drone cells present.

I don't think it's anything to worry about - they occasionally build some strange structures - sideways on for a queen cell is not unheard of but they usually build them in the coners of the comb not on the topbar like that. Could you see if there was a larvae in there ? It could just be misplaced and mis-shaped drone cell, I see those fairly regularly.

I did wonder if it might be a drone cell due to odd position but as I haven’t actually seen a QC in the flesh yet, thought it best to check. There was a larvae inside. Thinking I could remove it and check in 5 days (belt & braces!)?
There are quite a few drone cells & some drones in the brood box.

You often get things like that. I simply remove them with the hive tool. I wouldn't want a queen cell there anyway! But......it should make you aware that there may be queen cells elsewhere. Well done for having a cuppa and asking 👍

Thanks! Went back & removed this plus 8 empty play cups so I don’t have to recheck them again! Will have another look on Friday & see what they’re upto.
