Open floor in winter?

You always get the occasional colony that bucks the trend. Remember when a few of us did our 'Works experience' with Chris B many moons ago, PeteD came across a full colony that had propolised a whole OMF floor so well you could hardly see there was originally mesh there (he may still have the photograph).
Can honestly say that I have never experienced it in either overwintering nucs or full colonies

It's an interesting one.
I wonder if aspect has anything to do with it rather than just geographical location?
Our WBC, with solid floor, has always overwintered better than the nationals.
They're better now that we put the inspection boards in for the winter.
 
I was asking bingvader millet if they have insulation on.
