Checked for a laying queen this evening. As the bees are only on 2 or 3 frames (Not one as pressumed on Tuesday) I lifted out the old comb frame, but as they had built across the next frame, I have torn a bit of comb and some honey ran down the frame. I did not then lift all the frame out. Is this OK... Don't want to stick everyone together.... The good news is there is capped brood and lava on the frame. Looks like I have my first hive...

When should I expect the capped bees to hatch?
Thanks everyone,
Craig.

A worker will emerge three weeks after the egg is layed. Drones, an extra couple of days.

Congratulations! and don't worry about the torn comb- the bees will sort it out.

Thanks all.

Drstitson... Sorry, still learning. I will keep an eye open for the bees to emerge.

Thanks skyhook.

Oliver... You seem to know an awfull lot.... How long have you been beekeeping?

How long have you been beekeeping?

Not long - a decade or so - but an interest for 45 years or more. I have read an awful lot too, but not as much as the likes of Hivemaker, PolyHive and Finman. I am only a hobbyist. My farming and scientific background helps a bit, I suppose.

Regards, RAB

Craig, all bees do 'hatch' but this is three days after the eggs are laid. However as drstitson said, they 'emerge' from the cells.

Can I suggest you buy the book, 'Bees at the Bottom of the Garden' to start your beekeeping library.

Can i also recommend that you go and join your locan association also i recommend the preliminary course as you learn all the timescale when the different cast's hatch seal the cell and emerge. Very importand that you know this. especially the days for a queen as this might help you to stop your hive from swarming in the future.
