I've got some trafelite numbers to put on my poly hives . What's the best glue to use? Contact cement? Don't want to melt the poly too much conversely don't want the glue to degrade in the damp.

Use a large self taping screw, through the numbers.
Means you can take the number off easily if you need to.

Yes, numbering essential when beekeeper over 60, memory rubbish and hive records important. Patience with we oldies..:sos:

I must remember to stop giving advice, it is obviously of little value on here.

Please don't stop. Remember, there are many that lurk more than type that scan for decent advice. For every 1 vocal person there will be a lot of readers

Yes, I agree that for moving 50 or so hives between sites, roof-only numbering would not be ideal.
However, that isn't my problem (or the OP's, or for the majority on here!) :)

And my preference is for identification on one of the sides of the roof, rather than on the top.

Would it not be better to start as you mean to go on in case you one day you have many hives that you may need to transport? It would be better than having to alter methods at a later date if you started with one that works for every eventuality
