Checked an active and apparently healthy colony twice now, two weeks apart, since the temp here in the Highlands reached 11degC. No brood on either occasion - should I be worried? If not, at what point should I be worried?

The queen is marked. I didn't find her on either occasion, but I didn't do an extensive search... I usually go on existence of brood.

Any eggs?
First off I would suggest you put in a test frame to give an idea of whether or not there is a queen in there.
If old queen was marked then you might have a new one in there, waiting to mate or to come into lay
