Does anyone have a diagram of how brood and stores may be laid out in a natural hive (such as a hollow tree)?

They start at top with brood and food and as they work their way down the brood finishes up at bottom and food up top.

Agreed

I'd also say that much would depend on the prevailing conditions (wind direction) and the shape of the hole in the tree trunk.
I bet there isn't a standard that could be relied upon.

I am left wondering why you ask ?

Thanks folks. As this is my first year with bees, I've not seen how an established colony functions. I was removing a colony and combs from a chimney and found a lot of honey at the bottom and to the sides. Just observing, that's all

Diagram you want is on p33 fig 2.7 "The wisdom of the hive" by Thomas Seeley
also same diagram on p73 fig 5.1 in "The Biology of the honeybee" by Mark Winston.
Interestingly in this diagram all the drone comb is constructed close to the entrance.
