My method of planting spuds is very similar, but I do not use fertiliser as the spuds are planted out on the Fen peat. But I have used well rotted dung in the past to help by storing moisture. The edging up is important to stop the spuds being exposed to frost in early Spring, which can set the spuds back two weeks or more.
By the way my favourite spuds are Charlotte, a great second early salad potatoe, waxy and great taste
