If you really want to count them drop the whole lot into some alcohol
If I’m on a count I check them every day and clean the boards. Much easier

Use your preferred treatment and check the drop again.
If it hasn't worked then consider another treatment of the same or something different.

Tip 1:
If you draw 3 or 4 lines each way to divide the board up into squares, it's much easier to count the mites in each square then.
A Posca paint pen is ideal for drawing the lines.

Use the varroa calculator on beebase to determine whether you need to take action,
the level needing treatment varies depending on the month and method of counting the varroa.

Tip 2:
When going back to Beebase, the Beebase search doesn't find the varroa calculator, and it's awkward to find in the website menu,
