Hello people

Do you think that it is ok to move hives at this time of year? i have just had one of my farmers call me to say he needs them moved straight away as he has sold the land for development. i begged him to let them stay for another month but he is having none of it so i have to move them this weekend

it has got cold in Glos over the last few days and really worried that this move might kill them.

You have indicated in your profile that you have 80 hives, so I presume that you have built these up over the years and have more than a modicum of knowledge.......rather than buying them all in one go!

80 hives is nearing commercial numbers and most commercial bee farmers (unless chasing heather or another specialised crop) tend to move their colonies when they are in a tight Winter cluster.

Or at least that's what they tell me.

All-in-all, I think you'll be ok if you move the affected hives now.

Thanks guys

i dont have them all in the same spot i have them in groups of 20.

they stay in the same spot all year round (i did take 10 to exmoor for heather but cost me moore than i made which was 0)

thanks for putting my mind at rest i can sleep tonight now

Bet your glad they are in Nationals... I am dreading
relocating 4 WBC's in the near future!

( I prevented the "bully builder" from setting fires near my hives, by threatening to throw petrol over him!

........ even I am sometimes supprised by my negotiating skills!!!)

BC are you really running 80 hives?

You seem to be in panic which is a little odd for someone who must spend a large part of his life on the bees.

How long you had them (as per other post).

built them up over the last 4 year i only work part time and last year had a really good year with the bees and plywood offcuts from work which i built boxes and frames alot of hard work but well worth it!

the reason i put the post up becouse i never really move them and now its got cold i thought that it might kill them. i would be the first to admit i still have alot to learn and now i have this many FAST. after all this is why we have this forum to ask Q and learn from other people who have more EXPERENCE
