Moving from fontant to syrup

Nothing wrong with that. If it is warm.....above 10º then the bees are mobile and will reach the food. If it's cold and bees are clustered tight then on top of them is best.
 
The is weather is forecast to improve next week so I'll hopefully be able to have a good sort out in the warmth :) I've taken to putting the fondant on top of the crown board. Their previous keeper had the holes covered with mesh and placed the fondant under the queen excluder.

If they are bringing in pollen, and I assume they are by now, they don't need substitute in my opinion. If they have stores, (check by hefting one side then the other) they don't need feeding. I am generally OK with feeding syrup from now onwards but only if they need it.
