Hi . I have to move my hives as I have moved about 40 miles , do I still need to use screened covers this time of year ?

No the smaller cluster and low ambient temperature means they will be fine for a one hour trip at this time of year provided you have open mesh floors. If they are going in a car as opposed to on a pickup or something just make sure the heater isn't turned up too much - keep the vehicle as cold as you can stand really.

As a cheapo alternative to screened covers you can use insect mesh screen. Just lay a 50cm square bit over the top bars and clamp it in place with an eke strapped down over the top. You'll probably be OK shifting them without screens but the general shaking about they get in a car usually agitates them a bit.

It's very distressing seeing the state a colony gets into if they do overheat during transport.

.
I would use the upper screen. Hives may became very upset during transport.

It depends about their mind too, how hot they are.

Frames must be tightened well, that they do not shiver in boxes.
