Moving Bees

I need to move my bees before next spring and was after some advice if to do it now / in winter / or very early spring next year?
Also can i move the hives any (short) distance in winter?

Winter can be a good time to make a move so long as you dont disturb the bees much.

Thanks Sam, VERY helpful, my move would be pretty similar to what you describe from old OSR to new OSR, elsewhere on a farm with the old site being turned into new woodland. I've panicked a bit because of vandalism to some hives, so would like to move asap.
