Found this critter flying at the window trying to get out. But how did it get in. I put her under a glass and next to a 5 pence piece for size comparison.

I always knew Cardiff was a scary place! Is it a hornet?

She's a beauty! She may have overwintered with you, the wasps I know of still don't have workers yet. Hopefully she will find a nice nest site, if she hasn't already.

What a cracker ... saw one down here in my garden on the Costa del Fareham last year - scared me to death initially ... then I realised what it was - by the time I'd got the camera it was gone - never saw it again.

I'm not sure if she lives near my house in Cardiff or in the fields in Michaelston. I had just come back from my farm apiary. All my kit including an open bag that bees had been landing in was chucked in the boot of the car and I drove home in my Beesuit. Parked right by the front door and dumped kit in my hall. I suspect she travelled home with me from the apiary.
Anyhow she is now released in the park opposite the house.
