3 National Hives & 1 Observation Hive.(Indoors) & lots of empty boxes..
My obs hive was getting rather full so decided to do a split.
Had to get help from brother to carry it outside.

Took glass panel off and removed two of the frames and put in a nuc box. Couldnt see the queen but not too worried.

Bees all over the hive.

Cleaned the glass and as I'm putting it back, I suddenly realise there aint an awfull lot of bees around...

Brother said he handnt seen any great number fly off.

Had a quick look around at neighbour's bushes and trees etc... Nope.

Oh well....... Gone is gone.

Cleared everything away and went for my healthy "get the legs to work properly" walk.........Tree in park at back of house.....There they were.

I cant collect them from up in a tree so will put a couple of boxes out and see how things go.

Using a big torch and mag glass can now see that there are eggs still in the obs hive. There is also food and plenty of sealed brood...

Sorry to read this Dishmop,

With all of the other carp you have going you on don't need it, but you are still in there beekeeping.

All the best.

Strange thing was that neither of us saw them go....

Stealth swarm proceedure?

Hve just spent 5 days in hospital for a "Same Day Proceedure" and on arriving home the most important thing of course is to check the bees.

They have been busy making a new queen......

It looks as if the queen cell is now capped.

I was hoping to get some more pics of the QC but its constantly covered with bees.

Shows where they are building comb on the other side of this foundation.

They dont seem to like this side at the moment.

Last night I was trying to see what stage the QC was at and when the bees moved I see that the cell was open down one side and could see her inside. Not sure if the bees were nibbling the wax away of feeding her or both.
Checked this morning and still the same but re-checking a few minute ago I saw her casually walk way from the cell. Dont know if she had just climbed out or had been lurking around.. Quite big considering that some people say that scrub queens are often small..

The earliest they could have started making this queen was 14 days ago.

What is a scrub queen? I have searched the forum, and still don't really understand. Can you explain in idiot terms for me please ;) Is it a queen made from an old egg, 3 or 4 days old?

Others use it to describe an emergency Q at the edge of Q viability; 2-3 day larva, 5-6 days after laying. It's controversial whether the negative connotation of the term is deserved.

That's what I understand them to be saying anyway.

Time will tell.

Others I have had seem to have stood up to the test......

and then buggered off...

Just seen the new queen laying eggs.
Its the first time I have seen her since she emerged 8 days ago, so I guess she hasnt been laying very long.

That's a quick mating coming on to lay turnaround. Good result that.
