Immunity Poll

Hi All,

Would like to explore immunity to bee stings and related hypersensitivity in related persons. Hope you can help by participating in the poll.

For clarity - related persons are persons who share close proximity to beekeepers including partners, children, grand parents and any other persons such as cleaners or employees living within or regularly visiting a beekeeping household likely to have been exposed to trace amounts of beekeeping 'debris' such as what might be picked up on a bee suit.

Can you define what you mean by anaphylaxis ?

simple swelling around the area of the sting
more aggressive swelling affecting whole limb or face
rash over whole or large part of body accompanied with itching
Vomiting and loss of bladder and bowel control
Breathlessness
Giddiness
Falling to floor, passing out, unconsciousness, loss of bladder and bowel control
Heart failure.


First three would be a reaction ... following would be shock.

SWMBO is presently undergoing treatment at the Eden suit at Derriford Plymouth.

Difficult set of questions to answer as every beekeeper I know reacts in some way to a bee sting.

Since watching "The Swarm" my Mother in Law will not come near my home ( Not a bad thing!!!)

There's no need as this is a comparative look at rates between beekeepers and their related persons so the 'control' cancels out if there's a non event.

As diagnosed by a medic.

I know there's a debate about what constitutes anaphylaxis vs anaphylactoid reactions but in this instance I'm more interested about hypersensitivity and relative immunity so 'as diagnosed by a medic' resolves that issue.

Like beekeepers ask any group of four medics a question about a diagnosis and you will get sixteen different prognoses!

Not good when one has four consultants arguing at your bedside if they should amputate your leg or not.... especially when one of them is a RN Surgeon... advocating dipping the stump in boiling tar... good enough for Nelson!

All that would show is that the majority of beekeepers have never encountered anaphylaxis. The question is clearly designed to focus on those that have.

If you ask the wrong questions you get the wrong answers!


Question is then
Are beekeepers more prone to anaphalaxis ( what ever that is ??) than the general public 9 probably of the same age group, gender, racial group, eye colour, hair colour, alcohol consumer, meat eater, vegetarian, vegan, coffee drinker... etc etc...

Thing is, you are only taking the two extremes.
I react normally?
Swelling and itch like mad later?
Look like the Elephant man if stung on the face?

Who in their right mind, would keep bees if there was the likelihood of death when stung? To be honest, I'm surprised the Epipen Nutters haven't hijacked this thread already!

Maybe it was just me but I thought the question was phrased clearly and succinctly. It doesn't apply to everyone so why try to modify the question and/or the choice of answers to make it into a completely different question?
