I am assessing Honey water content – The Refractometer (Thornes) has a simple slip of tape at the front of prism … which has come adrift – is this a necessary part of the unit or simply packaging? Trying to draw down water content of honey but appear to be wasting time/energy. Still, advice of essentialness or not of tape welcome.

I haven't got the Thorne's one, but would this be a clear protective piece of plastic covering the prism? Which I would say is not essential. Or is it the red covering on the prism cover, which looks as though it covers the switch for the LED? If in doubt email them.

I can't believe it is anything important. Mine hasn't got one!

Anduril, took your advice and Enrico, as ever correct - Thornes informed - simplya piece of packaging. Obliged to you both. P

;). Thanks for letting us know. Always good to have an outcome.
