High winds forecast this part of the world over next few days. Possibly the tail end of Irma. It's one thing I worry about with my hive, especially in winter.

My hive is weighed down with bricks, and sheltered on all sides somewhat, so hopefully is safe.

How strong would winds have to be before you'd need to worry about a hive been blown over?

One problem with that comment, "strap not bricks" is there is a built in assumption that there is something to STRAP TO.

Personally I use bricks, and not only do they keep the roof on but they tell stories too. So double bubble.

Strap, not bricks and no need to worry

:iagree::iagree:

If they do blow over the girls are still protected. Bricks just weigh the roof down & can make it all a bit top heavy!

NB;
This'll be Hugo. We won't be seeing the tail-end of Irma for at least a week or so.

I had thought about being top heavy.

My hive is on a wooden stand, and it looks quite high. Wasn't sure whether to take it off the stand and place is on a couple of cement blocks. Hive entrance would be lower to the ground though. Wasn't sure if that was ideal.

IRMA will impact californian almonds in just over a years time...The impact on the production of "packages" and the resulting colonies is a delayed one

300x300x30 paving stones on the roof until around October then straps as well to the concrete blocks that rest on top of the stand legs.
PIR hives all without 20kg of stores need considered protection

Be thankful you don't have a house in the storm's path. The eye wall came ashore about 40 miles south of our house...something my wife's father left. Luckily only damage was some screen panels blown out of they pool cage. Better then the 2004 hurricane that took off the roof.

Some may say it's poetic justice that the home of the 6litre family saloon is subject to the results of climate change? :sifone:

What I don't understand is why would anyone not evacuate when they know it's on the way?
