But in this particular case the old queen will have been removed and decorating a gatepost, so no need to wait seven days to confirm.
Unless you're alluding to one of these 'perfect supersedures' that some keep twittering on about? :D

...Yes, there are often two queens in a hive, much more likely at this time of year.

Many thanks for replies to query and the reference to the research article. I have been away so apologies for delay in responding. As to the times advanced: Immediate, 2 hours, 24 hours and 7 days –are perhaps reflective of differing hive contexts but frustrating for a ‘Learner’. I am familiar with longer time process to dash all hopes of producing a Q of their own. This colony went through a Q- period earlier and killed an introduced Q (we missed one cell)... so they are behind in numbers as we approach wintering. Thorn you may be spot on with your query as to the existing Q (introduced from Apidea approx. 5 weeks) … she is laying in small pattern up one end of the Hive only… and the question put, related to replacing her with a hopefully more prolific Q for winter bees. We will give her another week and see how she goes … As to the Butler cage – we use a plastic variety with masking tape about a portion of it to give her a ‘bolt hole’ and save her feet. We plug with Queen candy and use newspaper and rubber band as well (Belt and Braces) just to be sure … Thanks again for the info.

I to have a newish queen who would only lay in the back 4 frames in the top box (big hive lots of bees). Has been doing this for the last 3 weeks. Plenty of empty frames ready for her, but she hasn't been interested. In the last week she has discovered there is a downstairs and has laid up the back 4 frames in the bottom brood box. Hopefully she is getting the hang of it now. She might just need some time.

How about splitting with a view to reuniting. If you are nervous about just running her in after 24 h, put her in a nuc and have both Qs laying not neither for however long you are thinking of investing.
