Hornet visiting hives

I was checking my hives today when a hornet came hovering round. I must admit I was taken back by the size of the thing, it was easily an inch or more in length. I took a swipe at it with my hive tool and it cleared off, but I'm sure it will be back again.
I thought only the queens got to that size.

As I wrote elsewhere, we have large numbers of Hornets here and the European species isn't really a problem.
