Local swarms of nasty black bxxxds I collected April/May did okay.........

They would be Carniolians... pretty black bees with a pretty black moody temperament to match !

Sounds more like a description of Amm. Carniolans tend to be tabby-coloured, with grey stripes; and although they have a reputaion for being swarmy, I've never heard of them as being particularly bad-tempered.

Probably right, it sounds more like football fans talking up/down various teams :)

What is often overlooked as various strains/races are championed/denigrated, is that most rigorous breeding programmes have produced docile, productive, healthy bees regardless of what genetic stock they have started with. The potential for improvement is there in most (all?) races, yet the characteristics we select for are generally far more important to the beekeeper than the bee, hence they will quickly revert to baseline in the absence of continued selection.

I have known some vicious AMM. Pluscarden Abbey comes to mind as having some notorious bees in their time. I have handled some extremely quiet AMM too, and sold some to Pluscarden:)

It's the breeding that counts.

Would you feed Amms with anything inferior ?
