I have bought, and would dearly love to use, one of the hive straps with "an ingeniuous locking device" - so ingenious that try as I might I have no idea how to use it. It is one of those ones without a ratchet that somehow locks back on itself. Can anyone assist me ?

I've been trying to source those! where did you get it from?

as for the way the strap works, I could demonstrate, but putting it into words ain't easy!!
perhaps someone has an image of one on a hive they could post onto the forum?

Spanset

Hi CB008, try looking in the videos section at the top of the page and then polyhive's videos under contributors, how to use a spanset hive strap.Hope this helps.Sorry for the long winded reply but I don't know how to post a link.

Mini Ratchet Straps: http://www.theratchetshop.co.uk/ratchet-straps-lifting-systems-mini-ratchets-c-26_27.html
With the lever operated style of ratchet strap, open the ratchet mechanism, insert the free end of the strap into the ratchet - there is a pin in the mechanism through which you feed the flat strap. Pull the strap through until you are beginning to get some tension on whatever you are strapping up and then close the ratchet and begin to crank it. Be careful, you can generate a lot of pressure from one of these and there is also a right and a wrong way round to feed the strap into the mechanism. To unravel the strap, there should be a locking 'button' you depress to allow you to pull out/unravel the strap. Its a pain if you get the strap tangled up as it will take an age to rectify - it would almost make you want to reach for a rope spanner!!

Highlight it with a sweep of your mouse, press control key immediately followed by your "c" key and that copies it to your clipboard.. but you know this I bet,

then ctrl + V to paste it in the message box.

Cheers Polyhive, I will remember that for future reference.Ainsie

didnt know all those key strokes - or you can -

left mouse click and hold, sweep over the link so it turns blue, right click copy, left click where you want the link and right click paste.

Another very useful one is Ctrl+X cuts out the highlighted text, as in removes it totally, and you can then paste it where ever you want.

one of the best inventions in modern times IMO
for all those new beekeepers ....."back in the old days" if you wanted to move a hive a triangular plate(one on each side) or a large staple(one on each corner) was used to screw or nail the floor to the brood chamber then the brood box to the super and then to possibly another super then the travelling screen was screwed down to the super(no crown board as it helped with ventilation, no OMF either) a long loborious job considering there was no such thing as a cordless drill. Then the whole process had to be reversed when the honey a was taken off.
a spanset is so quick and easy, although initially its easier with two.
one thing you have to be careful with is over tightening, if you have an OMF without the tray in the bottom it can tend to pull the sides in of the floor.Or if its put on when the hive is very wet, if moved after some dry weather the strap can be a bit loose

Still use mine for small one off jobs.
:hurray:
failing that I get out the 3Lb lump hammer... Square peg in round hole is not a problem.
