I use an engineering brick on the top of each hive (eps). Its position denotes the general condition. If it points to the front of the hive, everything is ok (the colony is queenright and laying well at the last inspection). If it is turned 45 degrees, there was no sign of the quee/eggs (suspected queenless but may be honeybound). If it stands up on its end, this is a flag to say that the colony needs attention asap.

We use that system. Also brick on edge denotes something else, usually specific to the operations in hand at that time of year e.g feeding time- may need extra feed.

Where do you buy these bricks? are they in the Thornes sale?
I expect so. Most reputable bee supply co's will get them, but special order I think. About a tenner each but not usually carriage paid.
I use 2nd hand bricks for a local man but I make sure I know their provenance as I don't want introduce foul brood or other nasties.
