I am new to bee keeping, but I am a tradesman and can make my own hives.
Does anybody know the sizes of timber to use etc.

Regards,

John

Dave Cushman's or Scottish Beekeepers sites are good starting points.

what about buying one in the sales or better still getting a lend of one from somebody and copying it??

i have nationals, but if i was starting again and making my own i would make smith hives for ease of making and frame compatibility with nationals

hi only just jointed but have been keeping bee and making all my own hives
for six years nowm can supply plans for modified national hive for a small fee

There are enough plans, free on the net, not to need to buy them. Basically, you start with a frame size and work from there, allowing bee spaces all around and at top and bottom (the floor being the only exception?) Stick with timber thickness (usually 18mm these days) to keep the outside dimensions the same as all that type.

As stated earlier, you need to decide on hive type, then depth of box, then top or bottom bee space.
