Hi all.

I am a mature student who is currently studying Animal Management which includes subjects such as Ecology and Wildlife. These gave me an interest in bees and I have chosen to base my personal investigative project (part of the course) on them.

Although my project is entirely theory based, I am very much looking forward to learning from people with real experience. As a complete beginner I have lots to learn, but I already have lots of enthusiasm and a love of bees!

Hi Lucy, and welcome. I'm sure one thing you'll learn here is the number of possible options and opinions in any situation!

:welcome:
Will you be getting some bees? :)

Not at the moment, but there is a possibility that the college will use my research and plan to get some bees in the future. I need to present the research first and hopefully convince them!

welcome :) what's your project's subject/title?

Hi!

My project doesn't have a title yet, but I was thinking about something along the lines of "Research and Plan the Addition of Bees to an Existing Animal Collection". I am also constructing a model hive which will also serve as another class' assignment (Environmental Interpretation).

I've read a few of the threads on here and, although there is a lot to learn, it is a very interesting subject. I've got a couple of books too but I think that reading about real experiences will be more useful.

Hi Lucy
I assume you are at Newton Rigg?
If you nip down the M6 to Myerscough they keep bees and may be able to offer you some practical advice re. the college scenario.

A male called Lucy? (Look at your forum details)

Oops! I didn't notice the profile!

Yes, I am at Newton Rigg, I'll email Myerscough and see if I can book a visit. Thanks for the recommendation!

As Skyhook mentioned, I am mainly looking for different opinions and ideas so perhaps I could post in the mentor's section. Maybe a few members would be willing to answer a questionnaire.

Thanks for the friendly welcome. I am slowly working my way through some of the older threads and I've already learned a lot!

Penrith and Keswick both have BKA's so may be worth attending some of the meetings.

Google BBKA and then Cumbria for details. There are others slightly further afield.

Thanks Black Comb.I'vealready tried the Penrith branch, but they asked me to come back later in the year which will be too late for me.

I'll give the Keswick branch a try.

What ever were you asking for? !! :)

People won't be handling real bees until March-ish. (Weather and local climate dependant... )
But most Associations don't shut down for winter. Its a time when newbees are encouraged to go on courses and read (plural) books.
Most Associations have monthly meetings usually with a talk of some sort.
Great way to meet local beekeepers.

You should be able to join very cheaply as a (beeless) "Friend".

Myerscough do NOT have their own bees - they have tutors who teach at the college but you have to go off site to the tutors bees. There is also a (not yet running) apiary on a college field that will be used and run by Preston Branch.
You'd probably be better trying Lancaster Branch - they're closer to you.

:iagree:
Lancaster will be better lucy, you will learn more.

I have met such people before (used to be a ships officer). The went by the names of Lucy, and Alice, and Lisa, and Wendy etc etc...................and got very offended if you used the name on their passports.

There might have been something funny about them....................

Seriously though, you have a lot of good beekeepers in Cumbria, who do very well in a marginal climate. Plenty of really good advice should be readily available right on your doorstep.

Times have changed. I did my introduction to beekeeping there.
