I took over a very overgrown allotment last yeas and plan to keep a couple of hives there from next year. Along one end I have constructed a mixed hedge of laurel, blackthorn, hawthorn, holly, privet, beech & pycanthus. I now plan to construct a hedge along one side behind the hives so was wondering which hedge plants would be of most benefit for the bees? The hedge already done is to primarily provide visual screening & protection from would be thieves but the one behind the hives does not need to provide that function.

Something evergreen to protect the hives from cold winds. Non-prickly would be good if you have to retrieve a swarm from it! Yours bees are unlikely to forage that close to their hives but doesn't mean to say it can't benefit other pollinators

My experiences say otherwise. Our garden plants and trees are all subject to continuous visits from our bees- especially - in flower - cotoneaster, ceanothus, phacelia and perennial poppies..(see my avatar for one)

Thanks for that, I also have about 100 lavender and rosemary cuttings which I intend to place along the side of the hedge

have you had the agreement of the committee to plant said hedge?

We don't have a committee just a guy from the council visits the site every other week and leaves any notes that he wants addressing. To be honest there doesn't seem to be any form of community spirit and everyone does their own thing. It seems that anything that improves the look of the site is acceptable. I have asked about keeping bees and there are no issues.
