Had a wonderful informative day at Buckfast today - just great!

We started a course 'All about bees' with Clare Densley and finally understand what AMM are and why there are so special...

It also means...NOT LONG TO THE START OF THE BEEKEEPING YEAR...Whoop whoop!!;):drool5:

Very good Queens.
But amm at Buckfast ........................

No - not really but they explained what it is...I admit I was never certain really. They are the first to admit that thier bees were a breed apart. Now they are happy that their virgins mate with as many drone as poss to ensure a wide bloodline...

All about Bee improvement without importing new queens from far flung and foreign places across the planet or AI II etc.... selective breeding whilst maintaining a good gene pool ... and all that !

Shock horror program on box last night with a warning what happens with intensive interbreeding in pedigree dogs... poss a bit off topic.. sorry!

I agree Icanhopt- we own an (allegedly) pedigree Bulmastif...but you wouldn't know it...but some of the practises are truly scary and immoral. Unfortunately some in-breeding with bees apparently can cause serious problems too. We tamper with many things and then wonder why they don't always work...

I remember years ago talking to a woman who had a tiny toy poodle and she was gushing about how she was busy making them smaller by breeding back the mother to sons and father to daughters.... no wonder there are problems.

Its all the fault of Crufts.
I bet half the pedigree forms are untrue.

Its nothing new... Ny father and grandfather were into showing Pedigree Collies and they complained that things were too extreme in many breeds and they didnt want that level of breeding in collies which was creeping in at the time... This was in the 60s! and early 70's.

In Cats the Siamese is almost unrecognisable as the pedigree cat of the 1960's

here is one from a film in 1965

Not the fault of Crufts , its just another dog show . But you can put a lot of the current problems squarely at the door of the Kennel Club .
This was a follow up prog to one a couple of years ago and despite plenty of noise from breeders and the KC nothing much has changed .

Traditional Siamese cats are still bred :)

Best thing the KC did was to stop registering litters from ******* that were over 7 years old.. May have altered again. Dont know. Bet it didnt stop people falsifying pedigree forms tho.
