If you are going to put a box on top close the bottom entrance and make one under the new brood box, preferably above and below the QX otherwise the bottom box will get full of pollen.

Think I am with you.. A Snelgrove style board?
Pop that on first, on top of old brood box.
Then new Brood box
Then Queen excluder.
Then super as normal.

no, just cobble up a thin eke (10mm will do) and leave a gap at the front for an entrance

yes, but the pollen is valuable and with an upper entrance they will store it above and not in the lower 'gash' box

I use a QX with a rim each side and a notch cut out both sides. The bottom one lets drones out
