Got mine for £1 from a metal dealer whom I didn't try to argue with re price! ( think they were friends with the Kray twins in the 70's!).
Works fine for cleaning up frames, and I stack them in fresh air after to completely dry so no mould.

I got one for a fiver but not big enough for 14x12 frames so I have to turn them around, most annoying operation, I like HM idea of a 45 gallon drum..... design a log burner for the bottom bit I think

Saw a good use for the boiler when not in use for frame cleaning on countryfile tonight. making homebrew.

I watched that as well, from some foreign place called Pembrokeshire, they even have a different new years day in one place.

what do u expect from people that speak such a strange language.

The countryfile burco boiler was a lot more substantial than the new ones, i have a 30 litre new one which is great for cleaning frames etc with a little added soda, but i have to do one end of the frames and then turn them no problems, they come out almost as new, i reuse my frames once then they go in the wood burner as kindlings, i would like to get hold of one of the older models if i could they do look ideal for what i want.
I forgot to say it cost £90 but has paid for itself in the first week of use so well worth the expence. chris

Have you seen any for sale recently Hivemaker ?

Is it ok to use washing soda in them.. I thought it may interact with the metal of the boiler

The internal drum looks to be copper that was coated, i have used caustic in them in the past with no problems, but now generally only use a drop of bleach, they were made for cloths, so washing soda should be no problem in these old burco boilers...don't know anything about the new ones though.

I think that the only problem would be soda + aluminium. I don't think boilers are ever made of that, but some saucepans are.

are we talking about using washing soda or caustic soda?

Washing.. never use caustic.
Am wary of collateral damage I may cause. Him indoors already aware of sticky door handles, propolis on kitchen floor, bees following him around the garden , ( he had transplant and the drugs he is on makes him attractive to the bees, it seems.:sos:), so I am erring on side of caution.

Some (on the Baltic fringe) do indeed advocate using boiling 3% caustic solution. My suggestion would be that anyone trying that should be wearing full protection. Nasty stuff. And needing consideration as to safe disposal of 20 litres or so ...

Hot washing soda reputedly works as well, if slightly slower, but is no more dangerous than that amount of equally hot soapy water.

The two i use are the same, old and well made, and new heating elements are still available for them.

That's great. I am hoping to get another one soon to pass on to pals in my BKA but suspect it may not work. Got a link for a source for the elements in case I can't find it please?

A tip, should the boiler have the old fashioned flat boiler elements clamped to the under side of the base . Invert the boiler , switch on for a half minute or so, switch off ,wet your finger and touch each element in turn , should it sizzle ,ok ,if not Mark with a piece of chalk for replacement , beats faffing around disconnecting all the copper links for meter testing !

As VM says but pleeese be sure it is set on the 'high' setting before checking that way. Or you will get the wrong signals!

Yep, nowt sophisticated about the old ones , temp control is accomplished by switching series, parallel, seriesparallel! Giving low medium high .
