It's interesting to watch what they get up to. Is worth noting that they rarely join the bottom of the comb to the frame and in 14x12s you definitely don't want to holding much off vertical. It is also possible that they won't fully draw the frame, just what they want/need.
I'd very much recommend taking a pragmatic approach and to begin with, in a new brood box at least, start out with some foundation. Once they've got a few frames of comb going getting them to draw out foundationless nice and straight is much less of an issue.
