I've got 3 hives which are all a little light. I'm quite high up here in North Wales and the cold and damp seem to be setting in already, so I'm feeding with syrup at the moment, but I really need to get my varroa treatment (Apilife VAR) on the go, before it gets too cold. Is it OK to treat and feed at the same time ?

You have left it very late for apilife var. it needs heat to make it work and is a six week treatment! . I would go for a weeks maqs and feed at the same time.

We in Finland use to feed and treat at same time. Treatment is effective about one week. To be succesfull it depends, how much colony has capped brood.

You are not late. IT is better now than never.

I put formic acid one dosage 120-150 ml per hive

I have some formic acid crystals. What solution do you use and how do you apply ?

My formic acid is 75% and it is meant to make silage.

I diluted one kilo to 65%.

Then I bought I litre minigrip plastic bags.

Then kitchen cleaning pad , which absorbs well water.

I put 120 ml that 65% formic acid into the bag.

In the hive the edge of pad is drawn 1 inch outside the pag.
Pag is on the frames in back part of hive. Entrance is 10 x1 cm.

120 ml to one box hive and 150 ml to double brood hive.

Millet, you should make sure you're wearing the correct total personal protection gear when handling Finmans posts. No wonder you've got a headache!

You do realise he is not a native english speaker?
One may or may not agree with the post, but not too difficult to follow after allowing for one or two typing errors - I would have thought.

HI
I have just used Apilife Var on the packet it says to break one tablet into 4 pieces and put in hive for 7 days, repeat 2nd tablet and finally with the 3rd tablet but leave the last tablet for 10 days. Total 24 days, how do you get 6 weeks? Thanks.

Well I think I understood Finman's post, so thank him for the information. However I am just going to put the Apilife strips on as instructed on the packet. Treatments every 7 days, four times. It'll be snowing here by the time I've finished !

Our temps dropped now to 12C. IT means that formic acid does not work any more . Next week temps are under 10C.

I trickle my hives with oxalic now, and in November a new treatment.
