Perhaps that's where the phrase "gibbering idiot" comes from?

hmm I think this is from Gybe which mean to put a sailing ship on the opposite tack and sail large before the wind and turn away from a hazard to windward

This would also account for regional spread.

So it should be a gybering wreck. - a ship that has crashed due to poor seamanship
