how do you refill without killing bees

must have killed 20+ just now and was pouring very slowly and tepid water

its from p**nes so not a cheapo and has rough sides for the bees to grip

what am i doing wrong

Pour the syrup in, twist the cup in a circular motion keeping it firmly placed on the base. Any bees under the syrup will float to the top and climb out. Usually they manage it on their own but a helping hand wouldn't go amiss with your poor swimmers by the sounds of it.

I find it's actually ok to twist and lift at the same time. It help any trapped bees rise to the top and get a grip on the surfaces.
Just don't lift it enough to break the surface of the liquid and the bees will be fine.

Then leave it an extra 24 hours. They will get bored and only a few will be in it on your return.i.e. feed every two days not every day

Try putting a piece of old stocking, or the netting you get oranges in, over the cone and under the cup (remember to cut a hole in the top). It gives the bees something to climb on.

thanks will try

its fine when filling for first time...its the second time when the circular cup and dome is already full of bees
If the feeder is empty but they are under the cup, a puff of smoke under the edge of the cup helps to drive some of them back towards the brood chamber.
