A 'Dutch Cage' is mentioned in the book "Breeding Better Bees - using simple modern methods" - a BIBBA book by Dews & Milner

But even Google draws a blank on this one ... and nothing on Dave Cushman's site.

I'm assuming that a 'Dutch Cage' is simply a frame-sized version of a Queen Cell Protector Cage, presumably made from Q/X material ?

By any chance, has anyone got a picture of one ?

Would you recommend "Breeding Better Bees"?

Would you recommend "Breeding Better Bees"?

Can't honestly say - I pulled that page off a Google pre-view, whilst trying to source info about possible techniques of breeding AMM without using AI. I don't actually have the book itself.

For rearing queens I can certainly recommend Wilkinson and Brown's 'Rearing Queen Honeybees in a Q+ Colony' https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/downloadDocument.cfm?id=36

as well as the Morris Board method which I've just discovered (thanks to this forum).

And of course the classic Jay Smith's 'Better Queens'.

although neither go into much depth about breeding issues per se.

I used this method successfully last year, and intend to go the same way this summer. I used what T's call a wire excluder frame trap, and my local supplier calls a queen trapping frame. I was first introduced to this bit of kit as a biotechnical method for varroa control, but it's use in queen rearing is more straightforward! Picture:

Another name would be a timing box.

Used to get larvae of the correct age for grafting.

This video from the Fat Beeman, explains.

Thanks guys - appreciated.

Must say that I do like the FatBeeMan's method of working ...
