Most seem oblivious to the cuckoo poem which goes:
The cuckoo comes in April,
...

April was too early but since the climate has changed things have got a bit earlier. This year I am surprised there are any before May.

I suppose Lymington is far enough south to be an exception - but the general will hold true at least, this year I would think.

RAB

Not much of a poem!
Cuckoo first heard in the valley 4 days ago (about the same time as usual)

We prefer this one here:

Wrth ddychwel tuag adref, mi glywais gwcw lon
Oedd newydd groesi'r moroedd i'r ynys fechan hon.

A gwcw gynta’r tymor, a ganai yn y coed
‘Run fath a'r gwcw gyntaf a ganodd gynta’ ‘rioed.

Mi drois yn ôl i chwilio y glasgoed yn y llwyn,
I edrych rhwng y brigau ble roedd y delyn mwyn.

Mi gerddais nes dychwelais o dan fy medw bren,
Ac yno roedd y gwcw yn canu uwch fy mhen.

O diolch iti, gwcw, ein bod ni yma’n cwrdd;
Mi sychais i fy Ilygaid, a’r gwcw aeth i ffwrdd
:)

The cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May,
He changes his tune in June,
And flies away in July.

Hi jenkinsbrynmair,

Think you need to renew the batteries in your keyboard.

It's sending out rubbish.

D

I've re-written it :)

The cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May,
And then come June,
He changes his tune,
And in July he flies away.

Much better, don't you think? :biggrinjester:

Better but not strictly accurate; doesn't change his tune.
And it's not much of a tune, either :smash:

Hmm, doesn't have the same ring to it. Maybe a Haiku is called for. :)

Our cohort were one of the first, I believe (well, we were in our school) to do English literature GCE 'O' Level on 'modern poetry' (as opposed to the good old 'Chaucer'). Little rhyming in the 'Albermarle Book of modern Verse'. That would have been back in 1964 - the poetry was selected from 'eons' previous. Seems to me to be a load of 'unversed' participants on the forum!!

Had this one been written by then?

Sumer is icumen in,
Lhude sing cuccu!
Groweþ sed and bloweþ med
And springþ þe wde nu,
Sing cuccu!
Awe bleteþ after lomb,
Lhouþ after calue cu.
Bulluc sterteþ, bucke uerteþ,
Murie sing cuccu!
Cuccu, cuccu, wel singes þu cuccu;
Ne swik þu nauer nu.

Apparently there's something in it about stags farting too, but I haven't heard any of those yet this spring either...

Well it seems after a few years of the 'modern' poets the sylabus was moved back to something a bit more meaningful in the '80's. Apart from the war poets and a bit of Ted Hughes we discussed Hardy, Milton, Chaucer, Austen and Shakespeare during English A level.

Well our cuckoo has arrived here ,heard him /her on wednesday seems to be doing as normal,up and down the valley calling only heard the one so far great to hear the call 2 weeks later than last year ,swallows were around 2 weeks give or take a couple of days anyone else notice if the birds were late getting back this year?
