I believe the five frame nuc boxes that are used for beekeeping are made to a standard design, but the manufacturer adds some mesh to cover over the hand holds, ie. they are not made as 'nuc boxes'. Anyone know a supplier of these?

ALIBABA

they are made in china dirt cheap aswell but you have to buy in huge numbers like 250 but could be less they work out to be about £2.00 each i was quoted by a english maker £500.00 for 50 of the same thing told him to stick them where the sun don't shine.

there is a company in the uk that make correx boxes, Pm me if you want MB.

Blinda where can you buy them in china i would love to know? i could handle about 250 at £2.00 a box?

They are purpose made correx nuc/travelling box's,they hold five hoffman frames, and are available from Fragile planet, among other places...i purchased 150 last year at £5 each, cheaper again if you buy in bigger quantity....how many are you interested in?

The mesh is also available separately, and there are plenty of suppliers of this.

Ten would do me just fine.

As far as I know, they aren't designed as 'proper' nuc boxes for beekeepers, but are just a generic type box that happens to be suitable as a 5 frame BS nuc box. Saw some in an American TV show once - the meshed-over windows are just hand holds. But I might be wrong.

The one's i have were designed as nuc box's, by Mikethebee.

I remember that Mike the Bee sold them as carrying boxes and used to sell them via his site as well as using them for his nucs.

Any carton manufacturer would make them to the size required. There are all sorts of sizes of cardboard (favoured material) for all sorts of products.

Just need a high enough volume to get the cutting and distribution costs to a minimum. The plethora of box sizes are a result of CAD/CAM applications era, and is now relatively old and 'well tried and tested' technology. Automated machinery and minimal waste.

We used to just give the supplier the dimensions of the product, the number of items required per box, any other pertinent details (layers, packing pattern, etc) and the boxes turned up by the thousand.

I bought some correx nuc boxes from Easy*bee. They come in one very large piece, and take quite some working out to fold correctly. They take 5 x BS brood frames. I doubt if "any carton maker" could make them without seeing one in the flat and copying it. Try Easy*bee website.

I believe, From previous reports that company sells them. Others do too.

Just consider some of the elaborate packaging for the up and coming (probably here already) easter egg market. Often one piece packaging. Not designed by someone in a backyard bee house or hen house. Maybe not so large, but possibly more complex.

Carton manufacturers - if they were unable to supply what the customer wants, they would not be in business long. Perhaps I should have qualified my statement slightly and put 'large' in there some place or places. Yes, there may be some specialists who concentrate on a particular niche market, but as you say, it is only one piece of sheet material. It is only a box. I have seen some very complex mind-bending product packages in other parts of industry. Some are far more ingenious than the 5 frame nuc box, I can assure you.

from the easy bee site:

"The boxes are easy to fold up and clip together my 6 year old can do it. Unclip and store away as flat-pack again"

obviously modern education system is good for something!!!!

unless one is talking 500+ i can't imagine it being economical to start from scratch again.

Can I just mention that these boxes are really one trick ponies.

Which is to day they are meant for sending nucs in and not, NOT for keeping bees in.

The main problem with that site Alibaba is the min order. quite often 500 or 1000.

Lovely prices but a bit too rich for my pocket. thinking how am I going to sell the other 998 bits?
