Apart from using a 10lb felling Axe, what do other swarm collectors use on high swarms

we use an extendable pole and canvas scoop that can be closed

see photos

why do i want to know, well this one after it was housed, it absconded even higher

Be careful looking up when wearing a Sherriff type face veil - your nose can be an easy target!-

one from the local association, bucket on a 12meter extendable pole!

High tree

With this high tree I passed a rope over a higher branch tied it above the swarm, which luckily was just on one reasonably sized limb, and tied the other end off at ground level.

Cleared some lower branches to make a path down for the swarm.

Then, leaning a bit farther out than perhaps I should have, cut the swarm branch so it ended up suspended by the rope, which was then slowly lowered to the ground and into an awaiting box.

The hardest part was getting the ladder secured in the tree!

30 foot pole...3 section...and a florist's bucket. 22 foot pole saw and lopper and a tethered ladder when sensible.

I wonder how many of us really appreciate the risks of collecting swarms especially up ladders. You have the restricted visibility of your veil, probably leaning out AND often using both hands to actually collect the swarm.

I know I've taken risks that I frankly should not have: My BIL fell off a ladder a couple of years ago and ended up with a fractured pelvis, and even then I think he was lucky not to have more severe/permanent injury.

I really hope that next time if my mental risk assessment says "too risky", I'll just let them go....

Quite right too.

I certainly wouldn’t work on a ladder that wasn’t secured top and bottom, and I still have another person present.

Mental risk assessment is probably the best guide you can hope for.

I previously worked in a job where ladders were in use all the time and looking back, some of the things people did were truly shocking.

Weight of the long, extending pole plus weight of bees can also be precarious.

Safe swarm collection comes down to large amounts of common sense and problem solving abilities, correct kit and a level of physical fitness. With the long pole the only issue is the flex on the top section...weight is not....and no I do not take swarms near any electric cables...though the pole saw is glass fibre poled....

30ft pole

Where can I get a 30ft extending pole from?? I'd love one of those in my toy box :D

Have a search for window cleaning poles. Long, light and carbon.
