spruce should be cheaper then ply and will last for years

That's what a weekend of rugby does for you! :D

Its only going to get worse at the culmination of Ireland week, the local pubs will rejoice I have no ticket so wont be sailing the mickermere this year.

All our gear is WBP, worst issues being needs a top up of paint every few years but all going strong? We have about 100 OSB 3 (Exterior grade) nuc boxes too still running fine.

All edges sealed and we gloss the roofs to ensure if the metal does pierce there is some backup.

If it was me instead of three nucs and three cheap plywood hives i would take one nuc and spend the rest on some good timber hives that will last you.

Darren

I would do this only the kids won't be to happy. You see, I have 3 kids and they all have claimed a hive each and they want to see who'll produce the most honey. Sorts of gives them an insentive to get into bee keeping. If I make one hive, they won't be be to eager to learn about bees IMO

Marine ply conducts almost as twice as much heat as a soft wood ply or softwood. Western red Cedar is one of the best insulating structural woods.

Have you considered using poly boxes? Paynes do decent cheap poly hives. Very beneficial to the bees too in terms of insulation. Can be painted to look a little nicer although there is nothing like the look of a nice wooden hive in the garden but ply wouldn't be very pretty anyway. You can save money in the short term by going foundationless and letting the bees build there own. That might not be best for a beginner though and you will lose money long term by having less honey to sell. If you are not concerned about squeazing every last drop of honey from the hives it is an option.

check out a few pallet places they sometimes have shipping crates for sale, with 6-9 inch planks also scaffolding planks use old saw blade in case of nails
ps also some cross members make good stands

Hi derekm,
This could be one explanation as to why I cannot hear one colony on 22mm solid pine?
