Most honey bees will make you a nice comb to cut in a TBH... local bees are probably best as suited to your particular specific forage and weather environment... where ever you live

ii just use my British Black mongrels not true Apis mellifera Mellifera the british black bee but they fill the manley frames from a starter strip where as some of my brown italians cap it too early to fill the width of my frame

:iagree: I found the darker the bees the better the cappings

Do all the frames have starter strips or do you alternate with thin foundation?

with starter strips i place them between drawn comb BUT i now tend to use the used previous years cut comb frames and the remnant of comb around the edge of the frame were the comb has been removed act as my starter strip

I'm not clear what this has to do with Carniolans. Surely, any strong colony will produce comb honey. Was there some particular reason for asking the question the way you did? Do you have Carniolans?

All apis melifera will produce comb honey, that's just what bees do but if you want pale(white) wax, AMM are renowned for producing this. Draw back is they are also renowned for their defensiveness.
IMHO no one strain has all the qualities, you just need to find what suits you and what works best

Defensiveness! Chased, not followed, over two fields. Scared the beejaysus out of me.
We parted company. I was obviously not experienced enough to look after the darlings.

I have 5 boxes of the sweeties and they're just fine most of the time - I only had to requeen one evil hive this year.

On the subject of cappings - the hives are full to bursting with the whitest of wax, beautiful comb. Unfortunately it's all ivy which I can't stand, but I suppose it'll do for bee food over the winter.

I know what you mean, not nice. The first AMM bees I had were shockers and would chase and follow days after the hives had been checked through.
Finally have some that are pretty good but still not as calm as my Buckies. Try to keep them where I know other AMM bees are being kept and so that I am not accused of spoiling the eugenics freaks fun!
They do make nice cut comb though and with white cappings.

Totally agree defensive bees are not to be tolerated.

Fact is that it is generally the yellow striped bees that seem to have this trait!

For what it's worth pure Amm's do make the whitest cappings on cut comb of any bee I have ever used. Real show winning stuff. The ones I've used came from NI and were very docile and a real pleasure to work with. However they weren't the best honey harvesters and in the NE climate and were very prone to chalk brood.
Buckfast have consistently done the best cut comb for me. The colour of the wax is good but it's not quite in the same class as AMMs. It was nice to confirm for myself what Br. Adam said about Amm's and their cappings.
Not kept Carniolans so don't know what their cappings/cut comb would be like.
