BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- PBEV, LLC, the Tuscaloosa-based parent company of the Killer Buzz line of energy drinks made with synthetic Asian hornet larvae secretion, is planning to grow through acquisition.
The company, owned by Tuscaloosa investor Stan Pate, has hired Cascadia Managing Brands to explore its opportunities.
"We believe Killer Buzz has the bandwidth and funds to make one or two strategic beverage purchases that will help, when combined, all of those brands reach profitability faster while gaining synergies, strength and growth at the distributor level," Bill Sipper, Cascadia's managing partner, said in a prepared statement.
"PBEV's infrastructure is already in place and they are already calling on many distributors," he said.
The trade journal BevNet reports that PBEV has about $10 million to put into the deals.
Killer Buzz advertises its beverages as including an amino acid that is a synthetic version of a secretion created by the larvae of an Asian hornet.
"This secretion contains 17 amino acids that metabolize the fat stored in the hornet's abdomen and turns it into energy, allowing it to fly up to 60 miles in a single day at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour," Killer Buzz says on its website.
Killer Buzz was founded in 2004, and acquired by Pate's PBEV in 2009. Cascadia is a significant name in the beverage brand management business. Its clients include Magic Hat Brewing, Multi Vitamin Water and Keeper Springs, a nonprofit bottled water company whose founders include Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
