I remember going to talk, by Roger Patterson and Wally shaw and both of them were quite certain that any queen mated after the end of June was substandard due to the quality of drones; in their opinion, not mine.
I don't quite understand how supersedure queens survive in that case

Wally is a big fan of queen rearing in swarm season for sure. I think he's of the opinion that as varroa levels rise during the season that drones are compromised by mites. You also have to bare in mind these talks are aimed at those replacing their own queens or making moderate increase and those who probably don't have much idea beforehand.
If your needs are met by one batch of queens per year, then he's right about the "best" time to do it.

I would have to disagree. All our bees would be dead in winter, if that is the case. If I can get my queens born and mated after June and able to keep laying for 3 to 4 years, I don't think my drones are compromised. You have to keep in mind it is the fittest drones that mate.
