I've been offered a van load of kit from a retired beek, plus half a dozen smith hives of my own that will need a clean up this winter

They'll need a good scorching - where's the best place to buy a blowtorch and gas bottle ?

I've started looking but some of the prices are ridiculous - I'd be better off buying new hives !

I think it will be cheaper to buy a blow torch especially if the hives are worth salvaging a few pounds for a blow torch off flea bay might cost you less than a tenner and a bit of elbow grease a new hive a empty pocket lol

I use a rothenberger sure fire but dam expensive

However, I'd recommend getting one with a button to ignite the gas - I have to flick a lighter every time and that's a pain.

Rothenberger ... will pay for itself time and again ... you can pick them up second hand on ebay for between £10 and £15 - usually nowt wrong with them ... they really are the best.

I've got a Bullfinch plumbers torch with integral igniter that runs via a hose from a football sized propane bottle with regulator. Had it for years but I believe Calor are the current agents. EBay or preloved might be a good place to search.

Looks like lots of you use the small cannisters, roughly how much burn time do you get from one cannister ? If Ive got 40+ supers and at least a dozen brood boxes, plus untold crownboards/floors/qx to do, are cannisters still economical compared to a calorgas bottle ?

Epay, hardware store, gas supplier. Welding shop? All possible places for a torch. Probably all better than beekeeping suppliers?

Important thing is to get an appropriate one.

Get more hives - the unit cost per scorch will reduce!

This is the cylinder I use - it lasts for ages - regular bits of plumbing, heating things up, lighting bonfires more or less on a weekly basis - cartridge on there at present has been on at least 6 months and is still going strong. I have a second torch with a football sized cylinder but I use it less as it's not really as convenient at the Surefire which is pick up and go.

I've also had the Benzomatic Surefire lookalike (lent it to a friend and never got it back !) - the older ones were virtually identical to the Surefire although the newer ones are a bit plasticky - but a fraction of the price.

If you are using those disposable gas cannisters, the cost of the burner will soon be a minor one. Nothing wrong with a refillable propan (or even butane) bottle. I have a small propane bottle which is easily transportable and I also use it for any indoor plumbing. The larger bottle is used for bigger jobs where moving it it is either unnecessary or worthwhile. Both are easily picked up. The bigger the bottle, the cheaper the unit cost for the gas.

A good place to get the screw in butane cylinders is Poundland (I think that's the right one) in the summer as it usually carries these in the garden/barbecue section.

Got some new ones last week a four for £3.99 when I had ordered some from ebay for about £6.

to expand on the above : you can pick up a torch that takes different nozzles so that you every thing from fine soldering to bending exghaust pipes
Sievert is good brand pick one up on ebay then get the nozzles to do the job
