I wonder if Pete might have carniolan - mellifera mixes? Colour is the usual indicator people use, and both are dark. Native types are noticeably stockier and brown to dark brown (unless bald!) whereas the blacker carniolans are more slender. In an apiary of mixed types you can also see the more native types flying in cooler conditions, and the pollen stored sometimes right round the brood nest.
