I agree with what you are saying. When the hives are close together It is better to do things slowly & cautiously. I always slow the process down when I get them close to their destination.
At the moment I have two hives close to their new stand & I'm turning them 180 degrees so it's slow & steady. At this time of the year down here I'm not too worried about a few bees going to the wrong hive.
I can see why it would be an issue with your hives coming out of winter.
With this method once you get a hive out in the open on it's own you can really bowl it along because they can't get it mixed up with anything else.
