I have been keeping bees for 5 years now, I got thrown in at the deep end by having a hive given to me that was meant for my father (who does not keep bees). I have not done any courses or joined any associations. However I did have a mentor who got me started and when things did go belly up in the first year I called in our SBI who put me on the straight and narrow and have not looked back. Because of those 2 visits by the SBI I went from someone who was about to lose his bees to now when I have 6 hives in great (at the moment!) condition and the prospect of up to 10 this year (swmbo says that's as many as I am allowed!). If you get stuck and are not able to access a mentor or association member there is still help available, don't be afraid to ask.
