I still use veg oil I buy it from bookers and it works out at 86p per ltr compared to £1.22 for diesel. Just needed to change my car filter to a different style and it works a dream.

I used to use used chip shop oil but cant get it anymore as there are laws that they need to prove how its been disposed of and if what comes in doesn't match what goes out then they can be prosecuted so I have been told.

It had gone up in price to the point where it was cheaper to buy new oil anyway. I think it's to do with the 2004 food oil waste recycling regs which were brought in to stop catering waste being used as animal feed. The requirement is now for the stuff to be collected by an authorised waste disposal contractor (and there are a few hoops to jump through in order to become a licenced waste disposal contractor !).

A few years ago chip shops and restaurants were happy to give away their used oil to those people making biodiesel until a few commercial firms muscled in and started making biodiesel in bulk - not enough free oil to go round so they started paying for it ... price went up ... waste collectors muscled in as middle men ...

Have a look on ebay for Biodiesel Processors - you can pick up a really nice professionally made one for less than a couple of hundred quid these days - but by the time you have added in the cost of the oil, the chemicals, the energy needed and your time unless you have a chip shop and access to 'free' oil it ends up nearly as expensive as Asda sell their diesel for !!

You can run an older style diesel engine on neat cooking oil but anything reasonably modern really doesn't like it much and needs biodiesel ...

Better off getting petrol engines and running them on LPG these days.

Woops ... way off topic now !!
