Replace the bird mesh with 4 mm stainless steel mesh.
If it were my house I would take the chimney down below the roofline and slate/tile over it.
The Damn things are a liability in so many ways
I agree that unused chimneys are better capped but if the chimney is still in use the use of a fine mesh of 4 mm would restrict the airflow so I would increase the area of mesh.

The chimney is very much still in use. I did wonder whether restricted air flow of a finer mesh might affect the working of the chimney.

I know it might not be practical given the height, but could you cap the chimney pot for the summer?
Or have something smoking in the grate on busy days?! :D

Has anyone a suggestion for a mesh to replace the usual wire guard on a chimney pot? The regular wire guard keeps birds out, but not bees. Are there building regs which would apply if altering the chimney pot?

If the chimney is serving a gas fire the use of a small mesh contravenes the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. A visiting service technician would be expected to isolate the supply to the fire until the mesh was removed. For a solid fuel fire you run the risk of soot clogging the mesh and fumes spilling into the room below.
